Judging

JUDGES

A lot of Judges in Australia have been competitors, it’s a very difficult job because each person has different likes, but all have an open mind.

The Chairperson of each section usually discusses with the panel what the latest directions are, and a step by step analysis of the interpretation of each rule of the competition. We do not instruct them to look for….

Show them the BEST and MOST artistic forward thinking head on the floor.

FLOOR JUDGES

Floor Judges are the people that walk around during the competition making sure that all the rules are adhered to. This ensures that each and every competitor has an equal opportunity to win. They look for the following:

All the rules are being obeyed

The correct amount of hair is being removed

Timing is being adhered to

That no coaching is being received from the floor

Should there be a need for any down pointing, it is the Floor Judges that make the decision.

Don’t be nervous out there. If you have read the rules correctly there should be no reason to be concerned.

Have the finished look in mind. Pretend you are in the salon. Be focused on your work and don’t change your mind half way, don’t look at any other competitors. This may be a big mistake - it could cost you the competition.

I have spoken to a lot of Judges about their thoughts on judging. Some points to consider:

Make sure there are no colour stains on your models face or scalp.

If you cut yourself or your model you must leave the floor because of the legislated blood rule. You may return to the floor if time permits. No blood should be visible.

Models who lay on a seat make it very difficult to get close enough to be judged. Seated upright is preferred.

Make sure that if you pose your model, that they are able to hold this pose throughout the entire judging period. This could be up to 40 minutes. (Nationals)

Make sure that your chosen model will show your work off to its best advantage.
